ENGLISH (Spanish below)Each one of Camacho’s stories is based on a personal experience, the narrations are almost a vivid scar. The stories are impregnated with life, humor, and the rhythm on a dance floor the size of the world where there is no need to stay seated watching others dance, but jump on the dance floor to move and be happy in a country where suddenly, adversity can go against the migrant experience. Manuel Camacho is one of the prominent narrative voices in Spanish in the United States. The Latino population in this country exceeds sixty million people, where sixty percent of them are from Mexico. Camacho’s texts not only narrate the penury migrants have to face to get ahead, do the jobs no one wants to do, and endure the racism from political agents and nativists incapable of thinking why the cities they live in have Spanish names (Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, etc.). Contrary to what we are made to believe, migrants not only come willing to join the workforce. Migrants cross the border packed with language, with memories, flavors, and experiences from their countries of origin. These memories remain engraved in these stories as documents of an “American Dream” that each time becomes even more, in Spanish: “Un sueño americano.” Read more
